Treatments
Orthodontics is a specialised branch of dentistry concerned with the development and management of irregularities and abnormalities of the teeth, jaws and face.
Its aim is to produce a healthy, functional bite, creating greater resistance to disease and improving personal appearance. This contributes to mental and physical well-being.
Orthodontic treatment is aimed at correcting dental and jaw abnormalities which result in malocclusions. These range from irregular teeth to treatment of cranio-facial abnormalities. As with all medical and dental treatments, there are benefits and risks. In orthodontics the benefits of undergoing a course of treatment are as follows:
- Improvement in the function of the dentition
- Improvement in facial aesthetics
- Prevention of trauma to prominent teeth & treatment of impacted teeth
- Improved resistance of dental disease
There are a few risks linked with orthodontic treatment, which are avoided by choosing the correct treatment for each patient.
In the vast majority of well planned cases, the benefits to the patient outweigh the possible disadvantages.
As a guide treatment fees generally range between £1800 and £5000 depending on the complexity of the individual case.
Hygienist
Orthodontics usually ensures the creation of an outstanding beautiful smile. However, the appearance of the smile is actually secondary to us. As specialists our major priority is to guarantee that you get the healthiest smile possible. Usually, achieving this objective results in an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
This not only means we strive towards getting the function and bite as good as possible but also to ensure that we don’t cause any harm in our procedures.
Dental disease can occur in either the form of decay or gum disease and is related to the quality of the brushing as well as the level and frequency of carbohydrate intake.
We are aware that orthodontic appliances make it more difficult to keep teeth as clean as possible, often we think people can be helped to keep the standard of the oral hygiene exemplary. This involves the expertise of a Dental Hygienist.
We feel it is right that all patients consult their own general dental practitioners and use their own hygiene teams as “first port of call”. However, it is not uncommon for people to have just a visit to the dentist or occasionally they do not have one. Equally it is often the case to find that a dentist and/or their hygiene team prefer we look after the patients oral hygiene during the orthodontics. It requires a particular level of experience to be able to clean thoroughly around Orthodontic appliances.
We are fortunate to have a superb hygienist in Claire Crocker as part of our team. She has over 15 years of experience and she has won the prestigious “Hygienist of the year award”. She is an expert in dealing with patients who are having orthodontics. Claire is based at our private clinic in Purely and we are more that happy to organise for her to see you or your family if a course of orthodontics is being carried out.
As mentioned above, a referral is needed for a hygiene visit and this can easily be generated by your orthodontist. Please ask them or at the reception desk if you want us to organise to look after this aspect of your care while you are under our supervision during your orthodontic treatment.
